Choosing the Right Flooring for Your Shower

September 25, 2019

When remodeling your bathroom and shower in Maryland, there’s a lot of design decisions that you need to make. How many vanities do you want? What color do you want to paint the walls? And of course, what kind of flooring do you want?

Today we want to talk a little bit about this last question and discuss all of the different flooring options for your shower and bathroom.

Ceramic and Porcelain Tile

For the longest time most bathroom floors have been made of tile, and among all of the different materials of tiles, ceramic and porcelain are some of the most popular. They have a number of pros and cons, the primary ones being:

Pros:

  • Easily maintained
  • Reasonably priced
  • Many different styles and colors
  • Durable and stain resistant

Cons:

  • Can be difficult to install
  • Can feel cold and hard to touch

Natural Stone Tile

Cousin to the ceramic and porcelain tiles, natural stone tile is a great option as well. It provides your bathroom with a modern and luxurious look. Here are some of the pros and cons:

Pros:

  • A variety of different kinds of stones
  • Very durable

Cons:

  • Higher maintenance than ceramic or porcelain
  • Requires a regular cleaning and sealing
  • Can be costly

Luxury Vinyl

While maybe a bit of a different option from tile, you should absolutely consider vinyl. Luxury vinyl can provide your bathroom with a high-end look at a fraction of the cost of tile, and it gives you a nice warm feeling underfoot. Here are some of the pros and cons of vinyl shower flooring:

Pros:

  • High-end look
  • Feels good to walk in, warm when other materials would be cold
  • Can be installed over an existing floor

Cons:

  • May not improve property value
  • Could look cheap if not professionally installed
