Can I Make My Bathroom More Senior-Friendly?

December 17, 2021

For older adults, using the bathroom can be quite difficult. The National Institute on Aging (NIA) reports that one in every three senior citizens over 65 years suffers from a fall each year. About 80 percent of these falls happen in the bathroom. One way to prevent your senior from falling in the bathroom is by making it more senior-friendly. Here’s how you can do it:

Install Lever Faucets

Regular twist faucets can be difficult for the elderly to operate. Lever faucets eliminate the need to twist and turn to access water. With hundreds of different styles to choose from, seniors can enjoy a stylish and functional way to access water. Replacing regular twist knob faucets to one with a lever is relatively easy, but you should always have a plumber do it for you.

Grab Bars and Rails

One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to make a bathroom more senior-friendly is installing grab bars throughout the bathroom. These grab bars give seniors places to hold on to as they maneuver around. Try installing grab bars near the toilet, inside the shower, and outside the shower. Depending on the type of grab bar or railings you choose, you can either install them yourself or enlist the help of a professional.

Raise the Height of the Toilet

Toilets can sometimes be too low for seniors to use comfortably. Raising the height of the toilet will make it easier for seniors to access. Even a difference of three inches can make the process much easier. There are many possible ways to raise the height of a toilet. One of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to do so is by installing a tall toilet seat.

Curbless Showers and Walk-in Tubs

Getting in and out of the shower or tub can be difficult for seniors with limited mobility. Curbless showers are a great solution. Not only do curbless showers eliminate the need to lift your leg over a high threshold, but they also look good in virtually any bathroom. Walk-in tubs are another great option for seniors who enjoy taking baths but hate the hassle of getting in and out of the tub.
