Bathroom Safety Concerns for Seniors

May 14, 2013

Did you know that there are more senior citizens currently living in the United States than at any other point throughout history? This means that we need to take special care these days to make sure that navigating the world as a senior citizen is as hazard-free as possible, both in and out of the home. Out of the home, of course, we don’t have as much control over what can be done beyond common courtesy.

One thing that can be done, however, is to make sure senior citizens’ restrooms are as safe and navigable as possible. That’s why Bath Doctor specially considers the needs and safety of senior citizens. Today, we’re here to share some tips for restroom remodeling that will take into account all of these safety concerns.

Concern: Limited Mobility

At Bath Doctor, we know that due to arthritis, chronic pain and other mobility issues, many senior citizens find that they need help getting in and out of a conventional bathtub or shower. This potential safety issue can be fixed with the installation of a walk-in bathtub or an easy access shower.

  • Walk-in tubs are bathtubs that offer the experience of being as submerged as you would be in a normal bath, but with the added help of steps for getting in and out, and
  • An easy access shower is a shower with a minimal barrier between it and the floor. According to an article on the Examiner, even a shower with no curb at all can be a great option to minimize tripping or having to step over a cumbersome barrier.

Concern: Slips and Falls

The slapstick trope of slipping on a bar of soap in the shower definitely is not funny in practice. It can be frighteningly easy for anyone to have a bad fall on wet or slippery floor tiles, but this is a particular risk for seniors. That’s why non-slip floors or even mats can be a great idea when remodeling a bathroom, whether you are a senior citizen, or just have an aging parent who visits frequently. Other things that can help minimize slipping and falling include:

  • Grab bars in the shower, which are both easy to install and can do wonders for supporting a person’s weight in order to keep balance and minimize fatigue.
  • A Yahoo Voices blog member recommends installing other minimally expensive add-ons, such as shelves in the shower. Putting shampoos and soaps on the floor can increase the risk of slipping!
