Clever Ways to Update your Bathroom for an Aging Parent

October 10, 2017

If you are living with a parent (or parents) who are experiencing mobility challenges, updating your bathroom can make life at home much easier, while giving everyone their privacy and independence. In the bathroom there are several simple updates that can make a huge difference, with or without a total bathroom renovation. Let’s look at some of the minor, and major, updates you can make in your bathroom to make it more accessible.

Clever Ways to Update your Bathroom for an Aging Parent

Safety First

One of the simplest updates you can make to your bathroom is to add some safety features, such as grab rails. Installing rails around the toilet and in the shower/tub can give your loved one some extra stability while getting in and out of the shower, or while using the toilet. Installing grab rails is a simple process, but can make a huge impact. Other simple safety features you can add include anti-slip mats in the tub or shower.

Tub/Shower Updates

Another area of the bathroom that presents challenges for people with limited mobility is the bathtub or shower. Bathtubs can be very difficult to get in and out of, and oftentimes aren’t the most practical solution for families without small children. Showers, on the other hand, can be much more practical, especially when they have a built in seat.

If your bathroom has a tub, or combination shower/bath, that isn’t needed, replacing it with a shower can make bathroom accessibility much easier for those with limited mobility. By converting a tub into a curbless shower, you and your loved ones will be able to easily access the shower for years to come.

Toilet Updates

Another challenge for the elderly or those with limited mobility can be using the toilet. By installing a handicap accessible toilet in your bathroom, along with grab bars, you can make trips to the bathroom much easier. Accessible toilets sit higher than traditional ones, meaning you don’t have to sit as far down, which can sometimes be a challenge for some people.

If you have a loved one living with you that is struggling with your current bathroom set up, or if you are planning for your own future, there are some bathroom renovations that can make a huge difference. By adding grab rails, a shower, and a more accessible toilet, you can make getting ready in the morning a breeze. To discuss your Baltimore bathroom update, give The Bath Doctor a call today!
